Company Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and focus on employee health

It's an interesting moment in EHS: Coming out of the day-to-day tasks of the COVID-19 pandemic, companies are focusing on employee health as opposed to just climate action and new environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals.

No matter how small or large, every employer needs to create a safe and healthy working environment. This obligation not only stands as a moral imperative and a legal obligation but also makes financial sense. This is further amplified by workers demanding and holding their companies accountable for better working conditions.

Environmental Management Systems and ISO14001

ISO 14001 is the international standard that specifies requirements for an effective environmental management system (EMS). It provides a framework that an organization can follow, rather than establishing environmental performance requirements. ISO 14001:2015 should be used by any organization that wishes to set up, improve, or maintain an environmental management system to conform with its established environmental policy and requirements

The Butterfly helps employers support their EHS and EMS systems by monitoring and recording key environmental parameters that can affect employee health, such as noise from machinery or equipment, reduced air quality, or even an increase in the heat index. Apart from time-stamped historical environmental information, the Butterfly can automatically generate alarms to multi-level users for action.

Covid-19 and air quality

If someone is infected, respiratory droplets and airborne transmission can carry the virus to others. The lower the ambient humidity and temperature is, the longer the aerosol can stay in the air. The Coronavirus cannot specifically be detected in the air but the amount of used air is easily measurable with the Butterfly. Both the infection risk and the impact can be significantly reduced. A stoplight approach can be used when too many people have saturated the air in an indoor environment, urging people to ventilate the room. The air quality sensor in the Butterfly measures both VOCs and calculated CO2 from exhaled breath and advises when to ventilate.

8 key environmental conditions monitored 24/7 for employee health

The Butterfly from Hidden-Brain is a next generation IOT (Internet of Things) device, partially developed by funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and a team of multi-disciplinary PhD's. With on-board intelligence, and ultra-low power battery management, there is no need to stress about where you plug it in, nor determine how to connect it to custom gateways across the facility. Simply mount or place the Butterfly in any outdoor or indoor location and start monitoring: Air Quality, air pressure, temperature, humidity, heat-index, dew points, vibrations from machinery, light, and noise.  The Butterfly has on-board memory that ensures that no readings are missed, even when wireless connectivity is unavailable.  The wide industrial specifications of the Butterfly make it ideal even for harsh environments.

The Butterfly and Conscious Pro enterprise software

The Butterfly in conjunction with Hidden Brains Conscious software can automate, record, and provide an audit trail to support ISO14001 and EHS systems. The Conscious software works with any mobile device or desktop.  Default ranges have been set for work environments based on WHO, EPA and university study recommendations for employee health making setup easy. Simply connect to your WiFI and start using. Multi-level notifications are generated and an email or notification is sent to the correct individual. Additional features include

- All environmental readings are time-stamped

- sensors are located on building floorplans for easy alarm management

- secure multi-level user and site management access

- Additional environmental information can be added, along with audit notes and remediations. All time-stamped for complete audit reports.
